BARD

BARD (Bioimage Analysis Research Desktop) is a cloud-native virtual desktop platform designed for containerised bioimage analysis applications.

Overview

BARD provides a cloud-based, fully containerised desktop environment where all applications run as Docker containers, orchestrated by a Kubernetes cluster infrastructure hosted at EMBL. The desktops are accessible via users' web browsers

BARD is designed for:

  • Image analysts running GUI-based imaging applications
  • Course organisers requiring scalable computational resources for various types of courses

Key Features

Docker-Based Applications

All applications on BARD run as Docker containers, providing:

  • Consistent environments across deployments
  • Easy version management and rollback
  • Isolation between applications

Powerful Hardware

Powered by Kubernetes cluster at EMBL, BARD offers: - GPUs and large number of CPUs, RAM - High availability and fault tolerance - Efficient resource allocation

When to Use BARD

Choose BARD when you need:

  • GUI-based imaging applications running with large resources
  • Docker containerisation for your applications

For HPC workloads and Slurm-based job scheduling, consider using BAND instead.
